From Nov. 1 until April 1, 2000 calls placed to Suffolk using the 516 area code will still go through while callers become familiar with the new 631 code. After April 1, however, calls to Suffolk County telephone numbers must include the 631 area code to be completed.

The New York State Public Service Commission has directed that the grace dialing period for 516 be extended in about 50 telephone exchanges until October 2001. The following exchanges are affected:
Nassau 516: 294, 333, 338, 379, 479, 671, 681, 741, 873, 876, 931, 932, 937, 938, 942, 997
Suffolk 631: 207, 232, 234, 271, 289, 321, 342, 351, 385, 421, 423, 424, 425, 427, 447, 475, 547, 582, 585, 588, 654, 665, 666, 673, 689, 696, 727, 736, 737, 738, 751, 758, 842
